Basic binding system
We have experimented with many binding systems, from a piece of garden hose (back then we were hosers) to our current versions ranging from a waterski type cuff with the ability to get in and out of the binding quickly, but still having stability for deep powder and bumps, or a clicker snowboard binding mounted on a flexible plate. For simplicity sake, we are promoting the waterski type cuff. That way you dont have to go out and buy a lot of unnecessary bullshit that you dont need if your not already a snowboarder with clicker boots.
The system comes with a plastic plate that is mounted under the heel piece of the back binding of a regular alpine binding. This enables the ski to flex normally. The cuff can be mounted directly on the ski, however we have broken many skis in the bumps under this mount, and since using the flexible plate system, none have been broken.
There are two additional riser blocks to adjust the height of the cuff. We suggest using both riser blocks from personal experience. It causes you to stay over the ski better and it is less tiring on the flats.
You can mount this system on a ski that you normally ski with, but we suggest that you have a dedicated ski for your Zski setup. Preferably a wide body powder ski for best all around performance. As with learning anything new, the shorter the ski, the easier it turns, however soon you will want a longer, more stable ski.
We recommend mounting the alpine binding a little forward of center approximately 3cm for a 190cm ski.
The plate is an aluminum snowboard base and the cuff is made by Flow and the system should be adjustable to almost any boot.
We use a regular hiking boot in the back or a soft snowboard boot and a clicker binding without the cuff. I personally prefer to be able to come out of a cuff without having to release the binding manually but not coming out can have benfits in tight places.
Let us know if you have any suggestions for improvements, but whatever you do, get out there at least 3 or 4 days and play with this new snow tool!
